Game Day Brats

The boys were so excited to see their heroes play at BoA Stadium!

When we decided to take Jackson and Waker to Bank of America Stadium to tailgate before the Panthers/Saints game, we knew we wanted the tailgate to be special.  So, we loaded up our $17 grill, some Johnsonville Beef Brats, and our fixin’s, and we headed to Charlotte.  We had perfect weather and great tailgating.  Plus, our brats were amazing!

I don’t know why I didn’t get any good pictures of our brats at the game.  I guess we were just too excited!  So, I recreated this recipe last night.  Below, you will find both the tailgating version of this recipe, and the version if you are at home and have amenities one cannot find in a parking lot.

Happy Game Day, Everyone!

From start to finish, this recipe will take you about 20-25 minutes.

Johnsonville Beef Brats
Olive Oil
1 White Onion
1 Green Bell Pepper
1 Red Bell Pepper
Sliced Mushrooms
1/2 tsp. Italian Seasonings
Kosher Salt
Coarse Restaurant Black Pepper
Pepperjack Cheese Slices
Individual Deli French Rolls
Aluminum foil

We sure love a tailgate! Jen prepares Jalapenos Buenos for the tailgate.

Tailgating Directions
Before leaving home, cut onion and peppers into strips.
In heavy duty aluminum foil, create an airtight pouch with onions, peppers, mushrooms, Italian seasonings, olive oil, salt, and pepper.
Pack grill and charcoal. (Don’t forget your tongs!) You will need to take some extra foil as well.

After lighting the charcoal, wait for the flames to die down, and place the foil pack on the grill over indirect heat. It will take the vegetables longer to cook than the brats.
Once the charcoal is ready, cook the brats as indicated on the package.
Meanwhile, hollow out each French roll in a dugout shape to make room for the meat, vegetables, and cheese.
When the brats are ready, put them into the buns, cover with peppers/onions/mushroom topping, and top that with pepperjack cheese.

Use the extra foil to wrap each brat and fixin’s individually.
Place them back on the grill for about 3-4 minutes to melt the cheese and soften the bread.

Kitchen preparation for the onions/peppers/mushroom differs from tailgating prep.

Kitchen Directions
Prepare the brats on the grill as described above.
Prepare the onions, peppers, and mushrooms by sauteeing on the stovetop over medium-high heat.
Follow directions for buns and preparing the completed brats.
Place assembled brats in the oven on 300 for 3-4 minutes to melt cheese and warm bread.

Serve with chips of choice or German potato salad.
